Indian Institute Of Management Sambalpur
The permanent campus of Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur has been developed over an area of approximately 200 acres at Basantpur village, near Goshala, Sambalpur. Strategically located, the campus is around 07 km from Hirakud Railway Station, 15 km from Sambalpur city, and 55 km from Jharsuguda Airport, ensuring convenient connectivity for students, faculty, and visitors.
In September 2018, the Government of India approved an estimated project cost of ₹401.94 crore for the development of the permanent campus of IIM Sambalpur. The Institute engaged NBCC (India) Limited, a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, as the Project Management Consultant (PMC) for the execution of the project. Under Phase I, approximately 64,000 sq. m. of built-up area was developed, comprising state-of-the-art academic, administrative, residential, and recreational facilities. Savings achieved within the sanctioned project cost were utilized to construct additional hostel buildings with a built-up area of approximately 8,000 sq. m., enhancing the campus's residential capacity without any additional financial sanction.
Executed as a 4-Star GRIHA-rated sustainable campus, the permanent campus reflects IIM Sambalpur's commitment to environmentally responsible, resource-efficient, and energy-conscious development. The campus incorporates several sustainable features, including 100% daylit and naturally ventilated regularly occupied spaces to enhance indoor environmental quality, rainwater harvesting systems, water-efficient plumbing fixtures, and reuse of treated wastewater from the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) for irrigation and flushing. A rooftop solar photovoltaic system promotes the use of renewable energy, while LED lighting and ECBC-compliant energy-efficient electrical systems and equipment—including transformers, DG sets, lifts, pumps, motors, and HVAC systems—help reduce overall energy consumption. The campus also integrates sustainable landscape planning, efficient solid waste management, and environmentally responsible construction practices, reinforcing its commitment to long-term environmental sustainability.
One of the most distinctive architectural features of the campus is the incorporation of regional art and cultural identity into its built form. Odisha’s traditional IKAT, a celebrated textile-dyeing technique, has been artistically interpreted on the brick façade of the campus buildings. The façade, inspired by the earthy tones of Odisha’s soil, creates a harmonious blend of local heritage and contemporary institutional architecture.
The Phase I development of the campus includes major infrastructure such as the Administration Building, Academic Block, Faculty Block, Auditorium Block, MDP Block with Guest House, Library & Incubation Block, Hostel Buildings, Mess & Dining Block, Shopping & Activity Block, Sports & Recreation facilities with Open Air Theatre (OAT), Faculty Residences, Staff Residences, Director’s Bungalow, Community Centre and Indoor & Outdoor Sports facilities, along with comprehensive site development works. The permanent campus today stands as a modern, sustainable, and culturally rooted institution, reflecting the vision and growth of IIM Sambalpur as one of India’s leading management schools
