Sight is one of the major six senses that plays a pivotal role in our quality of life. A huge part of India’s population suffers from eye ailments and are not even aware of it. The rural and lesser developed districts of our country lack infrastructural facilities & awareness on issues related to eye care. According to a recent research report, the number of cataract blind people in 2020 is close to 8.25 million against 7.75 million back in 2001. pic1

At IIM Sambalpur, with a strong vision of serving communities around, we have tied hands with district stakeholders to build a cataract blind free Sambalpur. We aim to achieve this milestone by using an interventional approach of high-quality modern age cataract surgery for eligible people in the entire district. The time frame envisioned for this project is 1st Jan 2021 till 31st March 2022.pic2

This initiative is a multi-stakeholder project introduced by Trilochan Netralaya (Not for profit Social Enterprise) in collaboration with Sambalpur District Administration, IIM Sambalpur, Sambalpur University, Aditya Aluminum (corporate), State Bank of India (CSR wing).

IIM Sambalpur is the knowledge partner in the project ensuring validity of the project with respect to inclusion criteria, exclusion criteria, patient’s safety, clinical outcomes after cataract surgery. The institute will also provide consultancy on possible modifications in implementation strategies as and when needed. The faculty along with students will monitor the process and study the impact of the social project in depth. pic3

It is said that the Sambalpur administration will conduct 7,500 free cataract surgeries across 9 blocks in next one year to help poor patients residing in remote areas of the district. The surgeries are to be conducted under the ‘Cataract Free Sambalpur’ initiative. It is our privilege as a management institute, to be able to work at the grassroot level and help in the constant development of our society. pic4
