Diptiranjan worked extensively for almost a decade in the Infrastructure & Energy sector before acquiring his FPM from IIM Ahmedabad in 2009. His research interest and work is at the intersection of Strategy, Public Policy, and Economics. He is especially interested in the Regulation and Competition issues of the Monopolies; State-led-capitalism versus free-market capitalism; State versus Private provisioning of goods and services including PPP; Political economy of Energy market and Resource Nationalism; Emerging market, especially Russia; Emergence and convergence of LNG market; Re-examining strategies (where to play) and business models (how to win) of National Oil Companies (NOCs) versus International Oil Companies (IOCs); Monetizing Externalities and Market failures; Instrument choice in Environment regulation; Climate Change and Carbon Finance; and Risk of Leakage in Carbon capture and Sequestration (CCS). He has published articles in various journals, including Energy Policy, and Climate Policy.

Prior to joining IIM Sambalpur, he was a founding faculty at the Adani Institute of Infrastructure Management (AIIM). He has also taught at the IIMs including Ahmedabad, Indore, Kozhikode, Udaipur, and Nalanda University. In recent past, Diptiranjan also worked with Brookhaven National Laboratory, Department of Energy (DoE), USA.
